About me:
I am a Professor of History and Judaic Studies at Brown University.
Born in London, I studied at Oxford University and completed my graduate studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, specializing in the history of the Jews in eastern Europe. After that I taught at the University of Haifa in Israel for 15 years before moving to Brown in 2010.
One of my proudest achievements was working as a member of the core academic team that created the exhibit at the prize-winning POLIN Museum for the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.
For this, I was awarded the Order of Merit for Contribution to Polish Culture, Zasłużony dla Kultury Polskiej, by the Government of Poland in 2015. Today, I serve on the museum’s Academic Advisory Council.
In addition, after five years work organizing the digitization of over 200 early modern pinkassim (communcal record books) from Europe, I am now a member of the International Academic Committee for The Pinkassim Collection at the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem.
From 2012-2014, I was a member of the Program Committee and the Strategic Planning Committee of the Association for Jewish Studies and from 2014-2016, I served on the Academic Advisory Council of the Center for Jewish History in New York.
I have also acted as a referee for appointment, tenure and promotion for Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, the State University of New York, Yeshiva University, and University College London.
I am currently on the editorial boards of the journals, POLIN: Studies in Polish Jewry, published in the UK, Gal-Ed: Journal for the History and Culture of Polish Jews, published in Tel Aviv, and Zutot: Perspectives on Jewish Culture, published in Amsterdam.
Beyond my academic work, I have served as faculty representative on the board of the Brown-RISD Hillel for the last five years.
Back in Israel, I was President of the Sulam Ya’akov reform Jewish community in my home town, Zikhron Ya’akov. Today I am an active member of the TBZ community in Brookline Mass. and have taught Jewish history for the Me’ah program in the Boston area.
